Microneedling

Known as collagen induction therapy, microneedling is a technique that is used to stimulate collagen production and give your skin the support it needs to reduce wrinkles.

Microneedling

Imagine a skin rejuvenation treatment that reduces hyperpigmentation, smooths acne scars and other skin imperfections, and diminishes pores, fine lines, and wrinkles.

How  Microneedling Works

Microneedling begins by stimulating the skin’s natural healing processes. To do this, it must trigger natural collagen and elastin production beneath the skin. Microneedling accomplishes this by creating micro-injuries in the skin using very fine needles at a well-controlled depth.

If you’ve ever seen a dermal roller, then you’ll understand how professional microneedling works. Professional microneedling uses a mechanical, spring loaded pen-like device instead of a roller with needles. This means it can go deeper, providing enhanced results you can’t get at home. Utilizing professional microneedling can give you a brighter, more youthful complexion after as few as three treatments.

What To Expect Before Your Microneedling Treatment

Pure 111 will examine your skin and discuss your treatment goals during a personalized consultation. At this time, we will decide if microneedling is a good treatment option for your needs. We will advise you to avoid sun exposure and discontinue skin care products containing retinol for 24 hours or more prior to your treatment. It’s also important to avoid waxing the treatment area 48 hours before or after treatment. If you have active acne, microneedling will not be recommended, as it will spread the bacteria to other parts of the treatment area, worsening acne breakouts.

What To Expect During Your Microneedling Treatment

Before starting your microneedling procedure, we will apply topical numbing agent to the treatment area. Some patients who cannot safely get lidocaine have had microneedling treatments without numbing. Comfort without lidocaine varies from patient to patient, so discuss this option with your provider during your consultation. Once you’re numb, we will begin the microneedling treatment. We will use topical skin care products to help glide the device smoothly across the skin. This will also allow the product ingredients to penetrate deeper into the skin, improving your results.

What To Expect After Your Microneedling Treatment

Please do not use anything but the recommended products after treatment. Apply post care products 2 times a day for 48 hours. Avoid excessive sweating for 72 hours and direct sun exposure for a minimum of 5 days. For best results, complete your series in 4 week intervals. Medical grade mineral makeup is preferred after 24 hours. Sunscreen should be applied and used consistently after 24 hours.

There is little-to-no downtime following a microneedling treatment. You will likely see some reddening of the skin and the sensation of a light sunburn. You may also experience some skin peeling as the old, damaged skin sheds away to make way for fresh, youthful skin.

Microneedling FAQ

Microneedling has been popular ever since celebrities filmed themselves getting the treatments for social media and reality TV. Even so, you likely have a lot of questions about microneedling. Below is a list of frequently asked questions and answers about microneedling; we recommend you discuss your individual needs with one of our aesthetic medical providers as well.

How many microneedling treatments will I need to see results?

Like most cosmetic treatments, results will vary from patient to patient. Depending on your needs, you will likely require three or more microneedling treatments to see results. Discuss your goals and expectations with your provider during your personalized consultation.

How long does it take to see results from microneedling?

Noticeable results take about four weeks following treatment. You can see initial results within 48 hours, as the collagen production will have already started working its magic.

How long do results last?

As collagen lasts for several years, your results will be noticeable long-term. Following your initial treatment series, we will discuss a maintenance plan to help you improve and preserve your youthful, smooth skin.

How often will I need to get microneedling treatments?

During the initial treatment series, patients return every 2-6 weeks for microneedling. This varies depending on the depth of your microneedling treatment (meaning how deep into the skin we target with the micro-needles). For shallow depth, you may return every 2-4 weeks; for deeper penetration, such as for scar treatments, we may recommend that you return every 4-6 weeks instead.

Is microneedling safe?

For most people, microneedling is a safe skin care treatment that carries very little risk. Despite how natural, easy, and safe the treatment is, some people should not get microneedling treatments. After all, there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all approach to aesthetic medicine. During your consultation, we can discuss your medical history and current health to make sure you’re a good candidate for treatment.

In general, patients who have the following conditions should not receive microneedling treatments:

  • keloid scars
  • Scleroderma
  • collagen vascular diseases
  • cardiac abnormalities
  • a hemorrhagic disorder or hemostatic dysfunction
  • active bacterial or fungal infection

Patients who have used isotretinoin within 6 months should not get microneedling.

Microneedling treatment has not been evaluated in the following patient populations; as such, precautions should be taken when determining whether to treat:

  • scars and stretch marks less than one year old;
    women who are pregnant or nursing; keloid scars;
  • patients with history of eczema, psoriasis and other chronic conditions;
  • patients with history of actinic (solar) keratosis;

  • diabetics or patients with wound-healing deficiencies;
  • patients on immunosuppressive therapy; and
  • skin with presence of raised moles or warts in the targeted area.

If you have any of these conditions, or if you have other skin care concerns or prescriptions, please let us know during your consultation.
